Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)

What is it?

Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) is a school-based social-emotional program that aims to reduce aggression and behavioral problems for preschool and elementary school children. PATHS is based on the principle that understanding and regulating emotions are key to effective problem-solving. The curriculum focuses on self-control, emotional literacy, social competence, positive peer relations, and interpersonal problem-solving skills. Teachers lead instruction through scripted lessons and whole class and small group activities.

What is the evidence base?

Children that participate in PATHS exhibit fewer problem behaviors, gain emotional knowledge, improve attention skills, demonstrate prosocial behaviors, and become more socially competent.
