Communities In Schools, Inc. (CIS)

22What is it?

Communities In Schools (CIS) is a nationwide K-12 dropout prevention organization. The CIS model offers prevention and intervention services by integrating community and school-based support services. CIS provides “Level One” and “Level Two” services. Level One services are short-term, low-intensity activities or services (e.g., financial aid workshops for high school seniors, providing school supplies, career fairs) available to all students. Level Two are intensive, case-managed services that support students who are at risk of dropping out. In Level Two, site coordinators provide direct support to individual students and monitor their progress to ensure their needs are met. CIS works with 2,900 schools across 26 states and the District of Columbia.

What is the evidence base?

Students who receive CIS services demonstrate more positive attitudes towards school and their relationships with adults and peers. Students also reach higher proficiency in math and reading when compared to non-CIS schools and are more likely to graduate from high school.
