What is it?
The Effective Black Parenting Program is a group-based program that serves Black and African American families. The program aims to promote cultural pride, reduce parent stress, strengthen family cohesion, improve child school performance, and prevent and treat child abuse, behavior disorders, and substance abuse. There are four essential components of the program: culturally specific parenting strategies, general parenting strategies, basic parenting skills, and special program topics (e.g. single parenting and drug abuse). The program is conducted in weekly three-hour sessions over 15 weeks.
What is the evidence base?
Parents that participate in Effective Black Parenting Program are more confident in their parenting abilities, utilize effective discipline practices, develop closer relationships with their children, and are more equipped to instill a deeper sense of cultural pride in their children.
